Celebrating Our Ten Year Anniversary in Dahlonega, Georgia

This is a little off topic from my normal posts about antiques, estate sales,  yard sales, and etsy. Last week my husband and I celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary.  We decided to spend a long weekend in the northeast Georgia mountains in one of my favorite towns, Dahlonega. Don’t worry though, we visited lots of antique shops (and even an estate sale) and I will be writing about those soon. Dahlonega offers great shopping and dining and is close to lots of beautiful places to hike including Amicalola Falls and the Appalachian Trail.

Once we decided where we wanted to stay I began searching the vrbo.com website. I have used this site a number of time to find vacation spots at the beach and in the mountains. I found several promising cabins but they weren’t exactly what we wanted. I then decided to try airbnb. Honestly, I was a little reluctant to use airbnb because I had heard bad reviews on this company. However, I think the problems often happen when people are renting single rooms in someone’s house while that someone is currently living there. We wanted a private cabin and that’s what I focused my search on. My husband and I went back and forth between places on vrbo and airbnb. Airbnb won out because based on the photos the cabin we picked looked amazing and the price was lower than what we found on vrbo.

We contacted the owner through the airbnb site and made the reservation. It was a very simple and easy process. June, the owner of the cabin met us there to show us around and give us the keys. While we may have been a little hesitant at first, we were both impressed with the cabin and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing mountain getaway.

When I say we were impressed, what I meant to say was that we were very impressed with this cabin. Actually I kind of hate to call it a a cabin because it was furnished like a luxury home. June’s attention to detail was incredible. She worked very hard to provide everything you could need for a vacation. She also went to a lot of effort to decorate her beautiful home. She even designed the tile pattern in the master bathroom. I’m not talking about coordinating floor and wall tile. She actually designed a Japanese cherry blossom mosaic pattern out of tile and incorporated it into the shower wall. It was so pretty.

Both bathroom showers were very deluxe with lots of jetted shower heads. The master bath also featured a large corner jetted tub.

The kitchen was beautifully decorated and had every appliance and kitchen tool you could imagine. It also feature a great view of the lake. I guess I hadn’t mentioned that yet. The house sits on the shore of a private lake which you can see from the kitchen, dining room, living room, and master bedroom. We even saw some deer grazing by the lake.

The house has a huge covered porch overlooking the lake with lots of seating. It even has a remote controlled fire pit.  We spent hours out on the back porch reading and relaxing and just enjoying the view. It was so quiet and peaceful.

Stairs leading to the master bedroom.

The second bedroom.

A nice desk and seating area.

I admit that I am a picky person when it comes to selecting a location for vacations and I would definitely recommend June’s cabin. She has done an amazing job decorating the cabin and has thought of so many small details to make her home as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.  Airbnb was easy to work with and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. From now on I will check with them when looking for somewhere to stay while on vacation. I will still use vrbo but I will make a point to check both sites before making my decision.

Let me know if you have any questions about our experience.

  1. We’ve used them both too and have had pretty good results. It’s always so hard knowing exactly what you’re getting but with 5 people in our family it works so much better for us than just renting a hotel room (or 2!). Sounds like you had a nice relaxing anniversary! Congrats.
