About five years ago I met a lady at church and we were gradually becoming good friends. We both had a lot going on and never seemed to finish our conversations when we would see each other. One day she said to me, “Hey, let’s meet at Starbucks and we can talk about things there.”
Now I don’t like coffee. I never have. I don’t like the way it tastes and I don’t like the way it smells. That’s just me. But it wasn’t about the coffee, it was about the opportunity to sit down with a friend and talk. So we made plans to meet that week.
I got in line to order my drink (because you can’t just sit down in a Starbucks for hours without ordering something, even a non-coffee drinker like me knows that). I didn’t want coffee. I didn’t want hot chocolate. It was late fall when we met and I noticed they had a new line of teas on their menu.
I decided I would try one of those. They had an apple tea but that didn’t sound good to me. I decided to go with their Berry Chai Tea.
And I fell in LOVE!! This had to be the best drink I had ever tasted. It was sweet and tart at the same time and it was a little bit thicker, almost creamy, than a regular cup of tea. It was so good. And I mean so good.
After that I started going to Starbucks almost every week, sometimes more than once, okay sometimes more than twice a week. Suddenly I knew where all of the Starbucks were. I would plan my route so that it would include driving by Starbucks.
Then one day I went in to order my beautiful Berry Chai Tea and they didn’t have any. They were expecting an order any day. But the order didn’t come. They had discontinued my drink. I checked at other Starbucks and the same was true at all of them.
Being the resourceful person that I am, I decided to make my own. That turned out to be a miserable failure. It tasted like exactly what it was: fruit juice and Lipton tea mixed together. So disappointing.
Well I have some good news. Five years later I decided to try my own recipe again and have come up with a drink that is close to Starbuck’s original. While not quite as good, I think it is about as close I can get.
If you love Berry Chai Tea, you need to try this recipe. I am sure you could experiment with the type of tea that you use in this recipe as well as the juice, but I like it just the way it is. Don’t try it with plain grape juice (trust me on this one). And make sure the tea that you use is a spiced tea. Enjoy.
Berry Chai Tea
These directions are not precise because I use a coffee mug for measurements.
1 Twinings Chai Ultra Spice tea bag (I order this on Amazon. My store no longer sells it.)
½ mug of Blueberry Pomegranate Juice (I now use Cranberry Pomegranate because my local store no longer sells Blueberry Pomegranate Juice.)
½ mug of hot water
1 ½ teaspoons of sugar (optional, depending on how sweet you like it)
Fill your mug with half water and half juice. Microwave until very hot (about a minute and forty seconds in my microwave). Add teabag and sugar and stir. Let steep. Enjoy.
How’s that? So simple and delicious. I bought the juice at Kroger. If your store doesn’t carry this type of juice, I would try something that you think would be similar. I would like to try it with just the pomegranate juice, but I could not find that at my local store.
This is the perfect drink for a cold winter day. Enjoy.
